Vienna Opera Summer 2025 ‘La Traviata’ Shines Under the Stars

After the success of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” in the previous year, the Vienna Opera Summer continues in July 2025 with Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata.” Vienna’s Heumarkt will be converted into an open-air opera arena from July 1 to 19 for twelve exclusive performances of the classic. Conductor and Artistic Director Joji Hattori will be the musical director, and Dominik Am Zehnhoff-Söns will direct.

The outdoor stage, specially built for this production by stage designer Manfred Waba, is conceived to create the best viewing conditions, with the orchestra centrally located. One of the special visual features is the incorporation of the facade of the Vienna Konzerthaus into the production, which adds an extraordinary atmosphere. Oscar winner Karl Markovics will bring a special dimension as narrator for the evening in the role of the “reborn” Giuseppe Verdi.

Cristina Păsăroiu, Nathalie Peña-Comas, Liparit Avetisyan, and others will take on the starring roles. The musical arrangement will be handled by the Vienna Philharmonia Choir and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra led by Joji Hattori. To make it easier for an international audience to participate in the opera experience, multilingual texts of the content will be made available through the Operaguru app. There will also be special schoolchildren’s, student’s, and disabled people’s programmes, as well as related workshops for schoolchildren. There will be catering for guests at the venue itself. Ticket sales already started.
